CHAPTER 8

The rope bit into Jesse’s hands as he lowered his end of the dinghy into the water.

“You gotta speed up, kid, we need to drop it at an even rate or it’s gonna take on water and capsize!” Gus barked at him.

Jesse gritted his teeth and worked through the pain to match Gus’ speed. The little boat was almost in the water when Linda walked swiftly up to them, all business. She poked Gus in the arm. He was wearing a sleeveless t-shirt from a biker rally twenty years in the past and her stabbing finger left a temporary white mark in his sunburned skin.

“How do I upload this footage?” she asked sharply.

It almost sounded like an accusation. She was on the warpath and Gus wasn’t having it. He turned on her and narrowed his eyes.

“What is it with you, lady? You gotta turn this Terminator shit off more and act like a human, ‘cause-”

The words caught in his throat when he realized he’d let himself get distracted and loosened his grip on the rope. It whipped through his hands and dropped the back end of the dinghy down the last few feet. Its wooden bottom slapped into the water with a splash, but thankfully didn’t dip below the water line.

“Goddamn it!” Gus took a deep breath and turned to Linda. “Look, we’re so deep in the wilds now that the internet is a forgotten thing. A ghost. Like American manufacturing. Poof. Gone. You’re not uploading crap, got it?”

She stared at him for a moment, flustered, and then spun on her heels and marched off. Gus watched her go, shaking his head. Jesse carefully lowered his end of the dinghy into the water. Gus was already halfway down the ladder, still shaking his head in a mix of annoyance and amazement. Jesse waited for him to step into the dinghy and find his footing, then grabbed the duffel bag of tools at his feet and followed his uncle down.

After Jesse settled in, Gus pushed them away from the side of the boat and Jesse began paddling toward the right side of the bow, where several concentrated gunshots had punched through enough of the hull to let a little water leak in.

They pulled up alongside the trouble spot. Jesse steadied the boat the best he could. Gus dropped the dinghy’s mini anchor into the water and the duo examined the hole. It was about a foot above the water line, but river water was still splashing in from time to time. Besides, if there was a nice rain that raised the Amazon’s levels they would be sunk before too long.

“Gimme the bag,” Gus ordered.

Jesse yanked the bag of supplies from where he’d crammed it under his bench seat and flung it across the length of the little boat. His uncle caught it, unzipped it, and began to rummage through. Jesse had no idea what his uncle had packed in there and he was a bit nervous to find out. He
